Blue Flag
Ours is the only marina in Poland that has received this international prestigious award for the seventh time in a row.
- The year 2011 was special for us, says Joanna Agatowska, Deputy Mayor of the City. For the seventh time in a row, the Blue Flag waved not only over the beach, but also over our modern marina.
The ceremony of raising the Blue Flag over the beach and marina took place on 1 July 2011. The Blue Flag is awarded in two categories, namely to beaches and marinas that meet the highest standards regarding water quality, environmental management, safety, and environmental education and information.
Those prestigious flags are now waving, not only in Europe, but also in such exotic locations as the Republic of Southern Africa, the Caribbean, Morocco and New Zealand.
This award is granted on a yearly basis.
On the national level, recommendations on granting the Blue Flag are given by the National Jury. The final decision is taken by the International Jury, seated in Copenhagen, comprising representatives of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the UN Environmental Protection Programme (UNEP), the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), the International Life Saving Federation (ILS), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the European Parliament Environmental Committee (EU), the Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC), and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
- In order to re-apply for this award, beaches and marinas must each year run a number of strict controls, adds Robert Karelus, Spokesman for the Mayor.
In 2011, apart from Świnoujście, Blue Flag awards were also granted to other locations in our region, such as Pobierowo, Pustkowo, Pogorzelica, Trzęsacz, Mrzeżyno, Niechorze, Kołobrzeg (the western beach), Ustronie Morskie (the seaside beach) and the marina camping PTTK in Szczecin.
